Substitute Lionel Messi proved to be Barcelona’s saviour and Werder Bremen’s heart-breaker as his late goal saved the Catalan giants from defeat in Germany after Carles Puyol had gifted the hosts the lead with an own goal.

Puyol's unfortunate own goal had looked set to hand Thomas Schaaf's Bremen their first win after an opening round defeat to Chelsea, but Messi's brilliance shone through to leave the Germans deflated.

It was the hosts who dominated the start, Aaron Hunt, a surprise inclusion ahead of Ivan Klasnic in the Bremen side, had a great chance to score after two minutes but his shot was straight at Victor Valdes in the Barca goal.

Torsten Frings should have done better when trying to find Klose inside the area, but did play a better ball for the forward on the quarter hour mark that brought a quick reaction from Valdes to prevent Klose from getting a clear shot at goal from the edge of the penalty area.
